DAVID GLANZER BIOGRAPHY
My mother learned to speak English by watching American
television. This is probably where my fascination with film began. From
watching old black and white movies on T.V., to going to the local
theater, I just couldn’t get enough of motion pictures. As my mother
mastered the English language, I began to appreciate film, not just for
entertainment sake, but to see it as a truly great art form.
Deciding at first to be an actor I studied the craft and starred in a
number of regional theater productions, a few commercials and even some
features. I was told I was pretty good, however, when I was given the
chance to assist a casting director on a feature, I was truly in my
element.
That first feature was Mississippi Burning, then followed the Holly
Hunter, Mary Steenburgen film Miss Firecracker directed by Thomas
Schlamme, the multi award winning creator of The West Wing. After those
two features I was hooked; I would pursue casting as my career goal.
In the course of my newfound career, I was surprised to discover that
even though many actors studied their craft diligently, many had no idea
of the nuances between acting for stage, television or features. Some
didn’t even know how to audition.
By reading talent I could give pointers to young actors, or offer
suggestions that might make for a more beneficial audition session.
Additionally, I have an excellent eye for new talent and can save a
director a great deal of time by weeding out those actors who may need
to study their craft a bit more. And I thoroughly enjoy attending plays
and showcases that highlight up and coming actors.
My adamant belief that film is art lead me to offer my services to
several young film directors from Southern California film schools. I
was amazed to learn that many cinema departments only touch on the
casting process and many offer no real practical experience at all. I
even sat on the Telecommunications Advisory Panel for one Southern
California school.
If I can be part of helping a director or producer attain their vision
of a film, then I truly feel I have lent some part, however small, in
helping to create what is quite possibly one of the greatest art forms
ever.
